Stretch Festival 2010
Ability Arts provides people with disabilities the opportunity contribute to the Arts and Cultural events within the Peel region. The Stretch Festival is Western Australia’s weekend long annual Arts and cultural event show casing the Peel regions community artists through workshops and projects which provide inclusive activities for our community members.
Ability Arts involvement in this festival has increased significantly over the last three years. Participating in five different projects this year, participants of the Ability Arts program are valuable contributors to Stretch. Being adults with disabilities the mental and physical health benefits of this involvement to our clients is extremely beneficial
Sharing the Edge
Thoughts, feelings and words flowed freely in a series of “Sharing the Edge” poetry workshops at Community First International Ability Arts, The thought provoking workshops were conducted by Annamaria Weldon currently in resident at the adaption project SymbioticA at UWA. Inspired by Annamarias infectious passion, photos and a visit to the Lake Clifton Thrombolites, participants enjoyed the experience of putting their feelings into words and writing poetry. They also took it one step further to create a moving soundscape in their next music session that echoed the sounds of the lake. Funded by the City of Mandurah and Country Arts WA. The fantastic writings of this group and others involved in this project were exhibited at Falcon E library as part of the Stretch Festival. DOWNLOAD Lake Clifton poems MORE Lake Cliffton Poems 2
STRETCH FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE 2010
After months of rehearsals the Ability Arts Drama participants entertained the crowd with their interpretation of “Mr.Magnolia Has Only One Boot”. Their performance was a delight to actor’s and audience alike and was followed by three musical numbers including their own composition called “Friend’s Like You” where audience participation was encouraged. Our proud musicians sang out the words they have written and practiced over the last year with great bravado.

THE MOSAIC GUITAR PROJECT
In March 2010 two of our amazing volunteers Lynn Kennedy and Lynn Walker took the initiative to engage our Ability Arts participants in the Arts Strings project . Artstrings is an exhibition and auction of donated instruments turned into fabulous works of art. Exciting works have been produced by Leon Pericles, Robert Juniper and many, many other fine local artists. Supported by a Community Development Grant from the City of Subiaco, the exhibition will be open to the public for two days, and have a ticketed event for live auction on May 22nd 2010. This worthwhile project enables 140 music students from Perth Modern School to tour to Europe in April 2011. As part of their tour they will perform in Anzac Services in London, take part in workshops and classes in Hungary, and perform in France and Belgium.
The Community First Ability Arts participants jumped at the opportunity to contribute to this community project and with the assistance of the two Lynn’s they have created a masterpiece from an old guitar. Community Artist from around Perth are supplied with old instruments to turn them into works of art , with some amazing results ,to view the gallery of original artworks or for more information about the project please follow the link http://wrendesign.com.au/artstrings/2010gallery.html
